Brewster is a village within the town of Southeast in Putnam County. Brewster has a population of over 2,200 at the 2000 census. The village is the most densely populated portion of the town. The town has a total area of 1.5 square miles.

As of the census of 2000, Brewster has over 1,200 people residing in 701 housing units. The households out of which 26.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.9% were married couples living together. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.08.

The median income for a household in the village was $,750, and the median income for a family was $48,393. Males had a median income of $28,793 versus $28,929 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,865. About 9.0% of families and 14.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.4% of those under age 18 and 12.1% of those age 65 or over.
